Horsefeathers originated from a passion and an idea by the owner, Laura Mercier. Having a desire and talent for creating one-of-a-kind pieces from an early age, Laura found herself in high demand and making specialty items for others. As she grew, she found herself in a great need of a place to work. The dream of opening her own business was always present, but somehow always out of reach. In November 2009, Laura rented a small residential house from a friend, deciding to use the new residence as her own personal workspace. Here she was able to expand on her talent and passion to create items for others while inviting friends into the unique setting to teach them how to create their own works of art. This location worked wonderfully for her a couple years, but it was becoming more apparent to her that she needed to expend in order to grow what she had started.
The inside of the old studio inside Mildred & Mable's
In July of 2011, Laura gave up the residential home she rented and moved into another downtown business - Mildred & Mable’s. This opportunity was the stepping-stone Horsefeathers needed to continue to grow even more. Horsefeathers now had their own studio inside of Mildred & Mable's are we flourished! It was then that Horsefeathers fell in love with the downtown community and all the supportive new customers that found us. However, space was limited due to their one-room studio and accommodating their frequent walk-ins and busy party schedule was no longer possible. After four years of blooming in a tiny 1200 square foot area, it was apparent to everyone that Horsefeathers had outgrown their space and in January 2015, the search was on for a new location where they could successfully house both walk-in painters and private events simultaneously.
On September 15, 2015, Horsefeathers reopened in their brand new location at 94 Franklin Street, less than a block away from their old studio. Using the two days they are normally closed – Sunday and Monday – the move was made and Horsefeathers celebrated their grand reopening on the very next day.
Grand Re-Opening in the new studio
